Global Warming: The Truth of the Matter
By: Jacob Rogers-Martin
Global warming is a theory that has plagued our nation for many years. If you walk into any high school science class or just simply surf the internet for a select amount of time, you will be flooded with a hodgepodge of biased environmentalist arguments supporting the theory of Global Warming. Yes it is a theory, meaning it is backed up by liquefied fact rather than solid truth. It is obvious that our climate is heating up, but it is no sudden change; our climate has been heating for over the past 1,200,000 years. Also to believe that every prominent scientist in the world stands on the side of this half-baked concept is completely ignorant and repulsive. In fact when the Heidelberg appeal was issued in 1992, 492 of our world’s most acclaimed environmental scientists signed a consensus expressing their doubts on global warming. From the vast span of 15 years between 1992 and now, the number of these “doubting scientists” has reached a total of 4,013. In addition to the Heidelberg appeal, the Gallup poll of North American climatologists showed that 83% of them debunked the idea of Global Warming stating that our technology is not advanced enough to predict exact climate changes. This is a fact. When you watch your local weather station and desperately wait for the so-called “accurate” forecast, you really are feasting off of rough estimates. To thoroughly calculate the weather changes and long term climatic alterations, one would need a computer with 14 components that make up the climate system. The computers that climatologists use today are the most advanced versions of this system, but they only have 2 of these 14 components. In order to have a computer to be able to read just one more component, would take a machine 1000 times as powerful as the computers we now use.
Although the climate has gradually heated up over a period of time, in some regions of the world climate changes have been decreasing with bound. For instance, in 1936 Arizona experienced 49 consecutive days where the heat index exceeded 90 degrees when this is put into comparison with the 5 consecutive days in 1995, the expression Global Warming tends to loose its significance. Along with these statistics, research through United States Government satellites and balloon measurements show that the temperature is actually cooling at a slight rate of .037 degrees C. This proves that our climate and weather patterns are unpredictable and tend to fluctuate from year to year.
In the year of 1996, the United Nations issued a report stating that Global Warming was a fact, thus eliminating the word “theory” behind the overused phrase. It took the UN 5 months to realize that two key paragraphs were deleted from the original draft. These two paragraphs include: 1. “…none of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed climate changes to increases in greenhouse gases.” 2. “No study to date has positively attributed all or part of the climate change to man-made causes.” In a nutshell these two quotes state that there is not sufficient evidence that points to a direct correlation between human emissions and ozone depletion/global warming.
Although it might seem like the humane thing to do, please don’t jump on the over packed green bandwagon. If you have no evidence to support your argument, then don’t try to stuff exaggerated data down venerable people’s throats. False accusations hinder this world more than a shattered economy. If you get to a point where you deem opposition to global warming theories to be “un-American” (like Bruce Babbitt) then that is when the word American has lost its relevance. We are the land of the brave and host the concept of free speech, so don’t misconstrue surface scratching with reality. Global Warming is a theory not a demonstrated actuality.
